8 Video Games that Need a Zombie Mode
One sure-fire way to make a good or great game better is to add a Zombie mode. This would probably also apply to bad games, where adding a Zombie mode would make them at least alright. Call of Duty: World at War would have already been a successful game with the standard multiplayer games and single player campaign experience. Adding the fan favorite Nazi Zombie mode gives gamers another experience to spend hours enjoying. They have even since added a second map, Verruckt (Zombie Asylum) to take the experience to the next level.
With that idea in mind we thought of 8 games that would benefit by adding zombies to them. The games we chose are a mix of classic and recent titles. Each game we think could benefit by adding a different experience centered around Zombies. Let us know your thoughts and other games that you suggest adding a Zombie mode too. You may also enjoy our zombie mash-up of Left 4 Dead with the movie Shaun of the Dead. We are calling it Shaun of the Left 4 Dead.
Mario Kart
Mario Kart allows you to race against your friends and the lovable characters in the Mario universe in mostly happy and fun environments. We would love to see the game get a handful of courses like Banshee Boardwalk that are raced at night and filled with Zombies. In this Zombie mode the racers would have to not only manage the course but also maneuver around hundreds of Zombies. New power-ups could be added to wipe the Zombies off the map or send them after the other racers.
Portal
In Portal you have to use your brain to solve complex puzzles that get you from point A to point B. Sometimes there are turrets and other things in the way that make that task even more difficult. We think that if you added Zombies to the mix, the game could be greatly enhanced. In this mode Zombies would be sprinkled throughout each level to try and stop you before you get through the course. In the early stages their would be few Zombies that are slower, but as you advance so do the undead. In some cases you will need to get around the Zombies, but in others you will need to use the Portal to set traps for them and move them to places they can’t hurt you. There is no need for a timer, the Zombies will let you know when your time is up.
Kung Fu
One of my favorite games from years ago was Kung Fu for the NES. Taking on different henchmen and fire breathing dragons on your quest through the temple to save your girlfriend was your only task. We would love to see an alternate ending where your girlfriend has become a Zombie and she triggers the dead henchman to become Zombies. This Zombie mode would be about escaping the temple that you just fought through, except this time facing wave after wave of zombies.
Duck Hunt
Everyone that has played the NES has played Duck Hunt. Shooting ducks and clay pigeons then getting laughed at by a mean dog is pretty much all there is to do in the classic game. We would like to see a remade version that allows us to take on Zombies instead of ducks. As the rounds go on, it gets later in the day and more Zombies come out to scare you. This is probably the simplest Zombie mode on the list, but we also think it would be fun to take the Zapper to the undead.
Madden
As complicated as the Madden football video games have become over the year with the various modes like franchise and superstar, we almost can’t believe they have not included a Zombie mode yet. Just kidding of course. We would however love to see one added. In this mode you would take on hundreds of Zombies rather than 11 digital football players. On offense you will need to plow through the undead and find open spots to complete passes. On defense, you need to get through the groups of Zombies to get to the ball carrier. There could also be mini-games where you through passes at Zombie heads rather than targets. Football like this has not been seen since Mutant League way back in the day. For marketing bonus points, they should call this mode the “Madden Curse“.
Sim City

Another classic game franchise that is due for a Zombie makeover is Sim City. You can already experience the different scenarios that range from alien attacks, power outages, and even something like Godzilla. We would love to see the cities being taken over by Zombies too. That seems like a simple enough addition, but we also have another idea to make it a different kind of mode. We would love to see the simulation become about fortifying the buildings and preparing defenses for the Zombie attacks. You would be able to buy boards, fences, and weapons to equip the city for the imminent takeover. During the attack you can try to send resources to places that need it, at risk of losing them to Zombies. The more prepared you are, the better the city survives, and the higher the score.
Braid
There is something to be said about a game like Braid that has the ability to rewind time to help you get through it. Now add zombies to that. Instead of the little characters that bounce around with no aim, why not have blood thirsty Zombies take their place? Different types of Zombies may be affected by the time manipulation differently. Some of the puzzles could be used to distract or trap the Zombies as you manipulate time to get around or through them.
Halo 3
Some will point out that Halo 3 already has Zombie gametypes with “Infection”. We are offering a different take on them. We would love to set up fortresses in Foundry-type maps and then once we think we are ready, let the endless waves of Zombies loose. You would have limited resources and time to build a fort or fortify existing structures before the infection. There can be different types of Zombies that have different attributes like strength, climbing, or even weapon use. The whole goal of the game would be to survive and kill as many Zombies as you can. If your fort is not perfect, they will find ways in. Certain parts of the fort may also degrade by the attack so you better be prepared to escape if taken over. Maybe you can try and make a run for your buddy’s fortress?
