What They Want: Gaming Mt. Rushmore Reactions
Last week we created our fictitious version of a “Video Game Character Mt. Rushmore” and were fortunate enough to see it being discussed around the internet. We had a hard time settling on the four figures (Master Chief, Mario, Lara Croft, and Sonic the Hedgehog) that we wanted to include and it seems that there were a million different opinions on who to include.
Over at Kotaku, Owen Good took a shot at naming his four picks using the four American Presidents on the actual Mount Rushmore to base his selections on. Kotaku fans hopped in on the discussion to the tune of 300+ comments. Owen agreed with us on half of our selections.
Not surprisingly at GoNintendo there were more than a few suggestions to for Link and Mega Man. One such suggestion was made by a user named “hcig” who took the time to edit our artwork to reflect the changes.
The discussion at GamePolitics took a direction that admittedly never crossed our minds when creating it. They pointed out that our American monument neglected to include any American characters. This makes us wonder if we need to create another version to address this issue. Also they made a pretty funny analogy, “To put it another way, would you drape a Homer Simpson banner on the Eiffel Tower?”
On DIGG there were well over 100 comments and probably nearly that many different suggestions, same goes for what we saw on Twitter.
After taking in a good chunk of what we could find in the comments we found a few things that people want. We really didn’t find any real beefs with the selection of Mario. We found a good number of people that wanted Link from the Zelda games. Having Link and Mario both on there was a little too Nintendo overkill for us, but Link is certainly is in the discussion. Mega Man got a few votes too, but wasn’t really close in our minds.
Gordon Freeman and Pac-Man were the other two that really kept coming up in the discussion. Sonic and Lara Croft were the two choices that came under the most legitimate fire. Master Chief was flamed on, sometimes with no real substance behind it. We also got more than a few mentions of the L-shape Tetris block and the “Doom Guy”.
Being that Mario is a lock, we want you to comment and vote (on the front page, right side) on your favorite video game characters that should join the famous Nintendo plumber on the monument.
