Micro-review: COD:WAW MP3

I haven’t played zombie mode yet, but I need to round up 3 reliable shooters to do that. (I don’t like fighting zombies alone, but I will if I have to)
Quick verdict: Map Pack 3 is better than MP2.
My favorite map is “Breach,” and that’s because one of the sniping spots in it is pretty golden, provided you’re patient. I would have liked to see more bottlenecking through the central arches by cutting off the side routes. That would create another no-man’s land on the map. There already is one–and that’s the horizontal line that runs though the fountains. You don’t want to get caught out there.
“Revolution” is fun. It’s a big map, and there are a few little nooks to camp out. I get the sense that the MP40/STG/PPsh crowd likes to hang out in the central brewery (?) area, The snipers like to hang out on the perimeter, and there’s lots of countersniping going on. It’s a very complex map, and I had to keep pressing up on my d-pad to see where I was, especially on respawns.
“Battery” has a similar dynamic to “Revolution,” but I think snipers will have a tough time settling in. There are some good sniping spots, but it doesn’t seem that you can camp too long at one spot. The side towers seem like a sniper’s paradise when you first see them, but the doorways are very think and force you out into the open. (Those doorways can also be penetrated by deep impact shots; I don’t know about regular ones.) I did see a glitch on the tower–I saw a live enemy’s gun and limbs peeking though the walls, and he wasn’t in last stand. (Yes, I got him. You’ll just have to take my word for it.) Snipers have no real business in the central building. (But maybe I’m wrong.)
Overall, Treyarch has done well with this one. I was slightly disappointed with MP2, but that might have been due to my high marks for MP1.
We have a lot going on with COD:WAW MP3:
- COD:WAW map pack 3 contest is LIVE
- COD:WAW MP3 breaks XBL?
- COD:WAW Map Pack 3 Code Giveaway
- COD:WAW Map Pack 3 Release Trailer …
Are we overdoing it? I doubt it. My prediction: COD:WAW will reclaim the top spot on Major Nelson’s next XBL top games list.
