Mothership Zeta mini-review

I’m completely done with the Mothership Zeta DLC for Fallout 3.

First, while I enjoyed MZ, it is rather buggy. My game froze multiple times with this one, more so than with Point Lookout, Operation Anchorage, and The Pitt .

Beware: there are also spots in MZ in which you can get “physically” stuck and not move.

Maybe I’m just a little dense, but MZ throws some curveballs at you. You might have a hard time figuring out what panels and buttons do things and which ones don’t. There are also several kinds of doors, and if you’re not careful, you might wander past a door several times before realizing that it takes you to the next part of your quest.

Pack your dart gun, because that will help with many of the aliens–but not all. These aliens aren’t pushovers, so you should also bring some heavy weaponry. And I’ve been superglad to have brought the Chinese Stealth Armor (acquired from Operation: Anchorage). The cargo hold in the ship gives you a chance to recover some Earthly goods that you might find useful, such as armor, ammo, etc. You should make sure you have lots of regular ammo before starting the DLC, though.

One of the sweet weapons you can bring “home” from the DLC is the Drone Cannon, which shoots a bouncy-ball–looking bomb that will explode after a few bounces. You can use this to hit enemies around corners. It will take some getting used to. The Robotics Expert perk can help a lot when dealing with these drones.

After you have beaten the DLC, you can return to the ship, and Sally (a little girl on the spaceship) will hook you up with a few alien items every so often. The alien epoxy is sweet, as it can fix a weapon even if you don’t have a spare to use for parts.

MZ is enjoyable, and the ship is much bigger than I thought it would be. (It might be unnecessarily big.)
