There was a scene in the movie “Spaceballs” where it joked about all the different merchandise that would be sold around “Spaceballs: The Movie”. The list included t-shirts, breakfast cereals, lunchboxes, placemats, shaving cream, and official toilet paper among others. The first few on that list can be purchased for just about every summer blockbuster movie just as Spaceballs joked about over twenty years ago.
Now it seems the video game industry is following suit and capitalizing on the AAA releases as well. Now the major titles have merchandise like toys, lunchboxes, clothing, and in some cases there are beverages too. Mt. Dew has given gamers branded drinks for both Halo 3 and World of Warcraft while Gears of War 2 had an energy drink from Demon. The “Gamer Fuel” from Mt. Dew was popular enough with Master Chief on it to bring back the same flavor a second time with WOW branded all over it. They also added a second flavor that we liked and shared with some of you. The Gears of War drink “Imulsion” flew a bit under the radar, but it still was made. There have been others, but none marketed like the ones mentioned before.
There is another big title to add to this list beginning in just a few short days. Monster Energy Drink has teamed up with what many consider to be the biggest title of 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, to bring a not new branded drink called “Assault” to gamers. In addition to the branding on the packaging, fans will have the opportunity win prizes from COD:MW 2 and Monster.
Those that purchase the 4-packs will have the opportunity to win the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Hardened Edition, future map packs, premium themes for both PS3 and Xbox 360, and Monster beverages. If you bump up to the 6-packs, only available at Sam’s Club, you will be given access to an exclusive online event in November held at Infinity Ward called “The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Training Experience”. Potential prizes will be redeemed unique codes in each package that can be entered on a special website that is not up as of yet.
