U2 Wants to be in a Music Game
Following the release of The Beatles: Rock Band, the famous Irish group U2 has openly expressed their desire to find a spot in a music game. The group was in talks with Harmonix and MTV Games about having their likeness and music in a Rock Band game, but decided against it. Ironically, we joke about them being in Guitar Hero as a “Band that Doesn’t Need Their Own Guitar Hero Game.” We thought a group with such a passionate and tight following would be awkward candidates to have a true-to-form and faithful Guitar Hero likeness. It turns out that we were not too far off.
U2’s bassist Adam Clayton specifically stated that, “We definitely would like to be in there, but we felt some of the compromises weren’t what we wanted. That could change. I love the idea that that’s where people are getting music, and we’d love to be in that world. We’ll figure something out. What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we’re interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation. We didn’t want to be caricatured.” [source]
Is this more than a trend and a future way for musicians to market themselves and appeal to consumers? However if every group jumps on the bandwagon (no pun intended) doesn’t that lessen the charm and value of games like The Beatles: Rock Band? Is this a way for the music industry to revive itself and have new life?
